Free camp near Port Hedland
Around a 30-40 minute drive towards Broome from Port Hedland is the Gravel Pit, where you can park the RV or caravan and spend the night.
This place should only be treated as somewhere to stop over before heading on somewhere else, as the name states, it’s an area a short drive off the main road with a few piles of gravel where camping is permitted.
The main area closest to the road seems to be an old road works site, where they piled up the gravel. There’s plenty of room and you’ll be sure to find some space. From this area, there’s a track that heads out the back to a slightly nicer sandy patch.
Next to no trees or shade can be found, therefore it’s a good idea to arrive late and leave early or you’ll be in for quite a hot stay.

Gravel Pit Campground Facilities
You’ll find some gravel and a bit of sand, but there aren’t any facilities whatsoever.
You’ll need to be completely self-contained, although unlike the Port Hedland RV Free Campsite, you won’t be kicked out if you don’t have the correct tent for your portable toilet and shower.
How to find the Gravel Pit
Head out of Port Hedland to the east in the direction of Broome taking the Great Northern Highway.
Turn right at Marble Bar Road, then after a few kilometres, turn right into Wallareenya Road. After going around the bend, you’ll see a dirt track on your right.
Take the dirt track and it’ll open up to the Gravel Pit. You can also take another dirt track out the back of the main area and camp beside Devil Creek, which is usually dry.
