Free camp right beside Lake Hume at Ludlows Reserve
Around a 10-15 minute drive to the east of Wodonga is Lake Hume, a large mass of water that’s filled by the might Murray River and you can camp right on the western edge of it at Ludlows Reserve for free!
Ludlows is a great place to set up camp and explore the surrounding area, which doesn’t just include Lake Hume, but there are plenty of other nearby places of interest in the Wodonga and Albury area. If you’re just heading from Melbourne to Sydney or vice-versa, then it’s a great free camp for an overnight stop as it’s only about 15 or so minutes from the Hume Highway, especially on a hot day as the lake is perfect for taking a dip and cooling off.
Make sure that you bring the fishing rod along!
Please keep in mind that this camp ground is for a maximum stay of 24 hours only.
Ludlows Reserve has a free campground, rest stop/picnic area and boat ramp with stunning views across Lake Hume. The reserve is spread over quite a large area where there’s plenty of space to set up the caravan or RV, and although there’s plenty of big patches of lush green lawn, camping in tents isn’t allowed.
If you get in early or are there in winter, you’ll be able to snag a spot right on lake’s edge, but don’t stress otherwise as there’s plenty of room and you’ll still be able to walk over and sit by the lake if it can’t be seen from your campsite, which would be rare.
Central to Ludlows Reserve, near the boat ramp is an under cover barbecue area with picnic tables, all free to use. This is on a large grass area, ideal for a picnic.
Just behind the barbecue area is a toilet block with five flushing toilets that are kept clean.
Drinking water isn’t available, so you’ll need to bring along your own supply.
