Lycesters Rest is a day-use picnic area and free 24 hour campground beside the Ord River on the eastern side of the Kimberley region, just next to the Purnululu National Park, where you’ll find the Bungle Bungles.

It’s just a couple of hundred metre walk from the rest area and campground down to the Ord River, which can be a good spot to take a dip and cool off on a hot day if you’re happy to bump into the occasional croc. Timing is also essential as there can be very little water in the dry months and too much in the wet season.

Pool at Ord River

The Ord River is beautiful. In such a dry area, it’s a nice change to see flowing water and lots of trees.

Although the river is close to the camping area, there’s a lack of shade, so you’ll be hot again by the time you make it back to the caravan or RV. It’s best to treat Leycesters Rest as a place to stop in for the night while driving across the Kimberley or for an afternoon swim.

For a much more shaded camp ground that’s on the waters edge, head about 10 minutes down the road to Spring Creek.
