LED Camping Lantern
Product Eco Rating
The outer part of this lantern has some good things going for it in regards to sustainability, which helps to make it somewhat more of an eco-friendly choice than the majority of camping lanterns on the market that are mostly made of plastic.
Stamped Steel is used for the cage, top and bottom parts of the lantern. Steel is considered environmentally friendly, mainly due to its durability and ability to be infinitely recycled.
As this lantern is rechargeable with a USB cord, it does have the potential to be charged by Solar or other forms of green energy.
Other than the Steel cage and body, most of the rest of the lantern is plastic, rubber and being a light, electrical components.
Two Lithium-Ion batteries come with the Lantern and the process of extracting Lithium from nature uses a lot water and resources, it’s quite damaging to the environment. On a more positive note, they contain less toxic chemicals than many other types of batteries, they’re rechargeable and around 25-95% of the materials in a Lithium-Ion battery can be recycled, depending on the technology and resources at the recycling plant that it ends up at. On the other hand, Lithium-Ion batteries typically only last less than 5 years and due to the fact that they’re not completely recyclable, they create waste.
Having Steel body and USB input to charge the battery, this LED camping lantern is a more of an eco-friendly alternative to some, mostly plastic and less durable lanterns. The use of plastic, rubber and other materials that damage the environment reduces this products overall eco rating significantly and an additional penalty of -1 has been taken off the overall score.
